My husband, a smoker for 30 years, was recently diagnosed with COPD. Unfortunately he still smokes occasionally. He is currently on oxygen. What supplements or herbs do you recommend?

COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder) refers to several lung diseases that include emphysema, asthma, and chronic bronchitis. These conditions interfere with normal breathing. The following supplements may be helpful in supporting lung functioning:

CoQ10 is an antioxidant that enhances oxygen in the lungs (see attached).

Fish Oil supplementation results in improvements in airway responsiveness improving overall respiratory function. It also helps to modulate the inflammatory response in the body (see attached).

Guaifenesin (guai), an ingredient found in many cold preparations, can help thin the mucus in the air passages and makes it easier to cough up mucus and clear the airways. It relieves the coughs associated with colds, bronchitis, and other lung infections. Drinking plenty of water while taking guaifenesin may make it more effective at loosening mucus or phlegm in the lungs. A product by Enzymatic Therapy called Air-Power contains guaifenesin.

Natural Factors makes a complex called Lung, Bronchial & Sinus Health that nourishes and supports the entire respiratory system.

Clear Lungs is a blend of Chinese herbs that helps maintain free breathing, keeping airways open and mucus levels normal.

I suggest taking the CoQ10 with the fish oils and then checking with your doctor on the other formulas to see which may be most helpful to you.

I also recommend that your husband set up a coaching session with one of our Nutritional Health Coaches to review our support documents on “Nutrition and Nicotine Cessation”. This is a free service.
